Elon Musk Accuses ‘IP Addresses in Ukraine’ After X Struck by Cyber Attack

In a major cybersecurity incident, X (earlier known as Twitter) has become the latest victim of a major cyberattack. This has raised concerns over user data and platform security.

On March 10, 2025, X experienced a major security breach that gained unauthorized access to sensitive user information. This incident impacted 40,000 users in the United States and the UK. Musk blamed the disruptions on a “massive cyberattack,” speculating that it was conducted by a big, coordinated group or maybe a nation-state.

X Hit by Cyberattack

Around 5:30 am. ET, complaints for outages on X started appearing. This reached an all-time high of nearly 40,000 on Downdetector.com by about 10 am. The site had patchy outages during the course of the day. In reaction to this, Elon Musk tweeted on X, saying, “We are attacked daily, but this was perpetrated with a significant number of resources. Either an enormous, synchronized group and/or a nation.

He also insisted in a Fox News interview that the IP addresses used in the attack were located in the areas “in the Ukraine region.”

During this time, a hacking group called Dark Storm Team took responsibility for the attack on a post that had been deleted from Telegram. Yet Musk offered no proof to support his assertion about the source of the attack.

Cybersecurity analysts observed that the outages are typical of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, which floods a website with a high volume of traffic. Chad Cragle of cybersecurity defense platform Deepwatch said, “It’s cyberwar hitting at full force,” suggesting that these attacks typically represent nation-state action.

Eric Noonan, the CEO of CyberSheath, warned that it is premature to conclusively link the outages to a cyberattack and urged the public to be cautious in making such assertions.

This incident happened during a time of rising political tensions over America’s support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Musk’s statement has raised questions about the possible motives behind the attack, especially given his recent criticisms of Ukraine and its leadership.

Many users expressed frustration on social media platforms, with one user asking, “Twitter keeps breaking?” As they faced difficulties accessing X. The company has yet to release an official statement regarding the outages.
