An Introduction to Software as a Service (SaaS)

What is SaaS?

Software as a Service (SaaS) delivers the applications through the web that a third-party vendor manages. Furthermore, its interface is accessible on the clientโ€™s side. Through the SaaS platform, various tools and software are licensed on a subscription basis and are hosted centrally.

SaaS is also known as โ€œhosted softwareโ€ and โ€œon-demand softwareโ€. In addition, it is gaining more and more gravity, and for excellent reasons. Not only that, for both small and big enterprises, but web-based applications also present them a better and more transparent way to IT services for their Businesses.

Furthermore, Integration of SaaS applications with other software can be done, using application programming interfaces (APIs). SaaS is now a standard delivery model for many business applications such as-

  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM),
  • Document Management
  • Service Desk Management
  • Accounting
  • Management Information Systems (MIS)
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
  • Human Resource (HR) Management
  • Content Management and Collaboration

Furthermore, Software as a Service is one of three main categories of cloud computing, alongside the PaaS (platform as a service) and IaaS. SaaS cloud usage is increasing continuously over the years because of the following reasons-

  • The internet is much faster than it was before.
  • Updates are automatic without any need for customer intervention.
  • Better Scalability and integration.
  • Ease of Implementation
  • No installation of any hardware is necessary for the customer.
  • Lower Costs.
  • Less time-consuming and easy to use.
  • Data cloud security

Software as a Service Cloud Computing has two main varieties-

Vertical Software as a Service

The software which answers the needs, industry-wise such as, getting software for agriculture, healthcare, finance industries, real estate.

Horizontal Software as a Service

The products that focus on a specific software category like sales, marketing, developer tools, HR but are industry agnostic.

Given below are the leading SaaS platforms right now –

  • Salesforce.com
  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Box
  • Zendesk

  • DocuSign
  • Google Apps
  • Dropbox

So, you can select from countless available software applications without needing anyoneโ€™s help. You can also access your apps/data from anywhere if you have internet access.

Before subscribing to a service, a free trial is also available if you are unsure about your selection.

The optimal advantage of SaaS software is visible when you connect all the SaaS applications and create a more automated solution as a whole.
