A New Era in Search Starts with Google’s Introduction of the Intelligent Search Box

Google has started what it calls a major redesign of Search, centered on a new intelligent search box. The feature is currently rolling out across all nations and languages, with AI Mode now available. Google unveiled the feature at Google I/O 2026 on May 19, describing it as its biggest search-box change in 25 years.

As stated by the tech giant, “We’re bringing our advanced model capabilities to Search with new AI features, enabling you to use agents just by asking a question. We’re also introducing a new, intelligent AI-powered Search box, marking its biggest upgrade in over 25 years.

The step indicates Google’s initiative to make AI easily available for users while simplifying the way people ask their questions. Intelligent Search Box is launched to handle longer, more natural-language questions. It can guide users toward AI-enabled answers instead of only traditional keyword results.

How Does the Intelligent Search Box Work?

The revamped search box expands to give users more space for detailed prompts. Google says it can suggest longer queries as people type, much like a smarter form of autocomplete. It also accepts more than text. Users can search with images, files, videos, and even Chrome tabs.

The search experience can then respond with richer, AI-generated answers and, in some cases, visual layouts that change based on the query.

Availability Among Users:

The new Intelligent Search Box is rolling out immediately in all countries and languages where AI Mode is already available. This means the feature is not a distant test. It is arriving now for supported users, with more visual and interactive search tools expected to follow this summer.

Google also plans to expand ‘information agents’ and generative UI features, which can surface summaries, charts, and other AI-built outputs inside Search.

What Does this Feature Indicate for Users and Google?

Search behavior is changing continuously and quickly. Users are asking conversational questions increasingly and expecting direct answers, not just links. Google reflected at I/O 2026 that its AI Mode now sees more than a billion monthly users, while AI-driven queries continue to grow.

The firm is using this shift to redefine Search around Gemini 3.5 Flash, which now powers the new experience and is also the default model in Gemini.

While conversational Google Search is set to become a trend in the upcoming months, users are going to experience faster answers and less time spent refining searches. The shift would also offer significant opportunities for site owners and marketers, alongside making the search more competitive. Under such circumstances, offering helpful and value-rich information will be a key driver for higher traffic.
