Microsoft Goes Down: Indeed, The Biggest Outage in History!

Yes! The most popular communication platform for the worldwide corporate sector, Microsoft Teams, went down for hours straight away, affecting businesses worldwide.   

Indeed, it was a hard hit that caused a tremendous impact on other sectors, including flights, stock markets, banking operations, healthcare, etc. The entire business landscape relies on Microsoft, the trusted technology company!   

Seeing a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error was a jarring shock. I was unable to log in to the system as the devices crashed upon being switched on.

What Caused the Microsoft Outage? 

The global Microsoft outage was possibly due to a failure in CrowdStrike, Falcon, a cybersecurity platform for Microsoft Windows. As said earlier, this led to a complete “Black Screen of Death” (BSOD), which occurs due to errors in driver software or hardware.   

However, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz stated in a post on X that” A defect in a software update for Microsoft Windows operating systems seems to have triggered the outages. “  

Kurtz also said in the post that this was not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified and isolated, and the fix has been deployed.”

While addressing the impact, users may notice that their services are read-only.  

Microsoft Teams   

The most popular communication medium for the corporate sector, Teams, functions stopped working, including group chats, messages, and more.   

Viva Engage  

Users might be unable to access Viva Engage.   

Plus, Major Disruptions Caused to

Airlines

A whopping 21,000 flights were delayed on Friday, and the number is expected to rise. The outage caused heavy disruption to the airlines. Delta, Indigo, American Airlines, Spice Jet, and others faced major operational challenges.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport said, “Due to technical issues, there will be delays in check-in.” Many more such airlines expected delays, causing travelers inconvenience.   

Health Services Hit  

According to their operator, two hospitals in the northern German cities of Luebeck and Kiel have canceled elective surgeries scheduled for Friday due to a global IT outage connected to the cybersecurity company Crowdstrike.  

Stock Markets  

The outages also disrupted stock exchange operations in many countries, including the London Stock Exchange. Further, payment systems were impacted in India. Some customers standing in the queue of Australian stores were unable to make payments due to the outage.  

What’s Microsoft Saying About the Issue?

Microsoft is committed to resolving the issue as a top priority and making everything seamless for its users. The company said on Twitter X, “We’re seeing continuous improvements in Microsoft 365 Apps services while we progress on mitigation actions.”
