Apple services encountered a global outage on January 20, 2026, affecting Apple TV users primarily. Social media platforms were flooded with user concerns such as ‘Why is Apple TV not working?’ and ‘Is Apple TV down?’
Alongside that, almost every service on iPhones faced disruptions and became unresponsive. It took Apple about four hours to resolve the issue and restore its services.
The complaints for the Apple outage peaked at around 6:48 p.m. ET. Initially, intermittent issues were observed on Apple TV. Later on, from 7:34 p.m. ET onward, other Apple services, including App Store, Maps, Photos, News, iMessage, iTunes Store, and iCloud Mail, became unresponsive.
According to Downdetector, over 2,700 complaints about the Apple TV outage were reported at 9:34 p.m. ET on Tuesday in the USA. 89% of total users faced issues with video streaming, while 5% encountered challenges with server connection, and 5% with the app.
Apple resolved the outage and restored its services by around 10:30 p.m. ET.
Why did Apple Services go Down?
Apple hasn’t shared any official statement on the causes that led to the outage. However, the firm addressed the issue quickly and restored its services. In the meantime, Apple has revealed that the restoration tool requires significant time, and not all features were fixed instantly.
Hence, the firm has suggested that users keep track of the real-time system status of Apple for further guidance on troubleshooting in case they face any difficulties.
How did the Apple Outage Affect Users?
Apple users across several regions encountered complete unavailability of services, including Apple TV, App Store, iTunes Store, and Maps Traffic. Users failed to download apps from the App Store and stream or purchase movies on Apple TV. The outage also prevented developers from providing updates.
Apart from that, the unavailability of Maps traffic restricted users from accessing live traffic updates. In the organizational space, the outage of iWork and iCloud impacted collaboration between workers.
All the Apple services are operating smoothly now, and the emerging issues have been resolved.
