Indeed, a top news highlight at the start of the week! Former Apple CEO John Sculley has declared OpenAI as the “first real competitor,” highlighting the tech giant lag in the fast-adopting AI world.
When speaking at the Zeta Live Conference in New York City, Sculley shared with Business Insider that “AI has not been a particular strength for them,” pointing out Apple’s delay in going with the AI initiatives, including its Siri redesign.
According to Sculley, who was the key contributor in leading Apple from 1983 to 1993 and put forth the Macintosh brand, the company’s next significant challenge is shifting from the “apps era to an agentic era.” This means that AI agents will handle all the critical tasks on behalf of users.
Giving a clear idea, he explained, “In the agentic era, we don’t need a lot of apps; it can all be done with smart agents.” Going further, this transformation will also drive the adoption of subscription-based business models that offer tech firms high stability and income streams.
The AI race is booming rapidly, with competitors outperforming each other! Amongst the many, OpenAI is leading the race with its next-gen capabilities and benefits for users. Sculley also noted that Apple struggles to keep up with AI leaders like Google, Amazon, OpenAI, and Meta, adding that “AI-driven projects by Apple have been delayed.”
Sculley brought up the recent partnership between former Apple design leader Jony Ive and OpenAI, whose business was purchased for more than $6 billion. Sculley continued, “If anyone can bring that same design dimension to OpenAI’s large language models, it’s Jony. I’ve been working alongside Sam Altman.”
OpenAI’s Recent Breakthroughs vs Apple’s AI Advancements
OpenAI is staying ahead in the AI space with standout innovations such as GPT-5, Agent Kit, a newly launched tool for developers, OpenAI apps that allow users to shop, create, and automate tasks directly through ChatGPT, and more.
On the other hand, Apple has come up with an Apple intelligence initiative that integrates generative AI into iPhones, Macs, and iPads. However, enthusiasm has been hampered by limited functionality and implementation delays.
Lastly, as suggested by Sculley, the sharp race toward the “agentic era” may be the next major tech competition!
