Building apps has never been easier. Users don’t need to look for the exact app they need in the Google Play Store; instead, create one that best suits their needs.
Nothing has recently launched, “vibe coding”, basically an AI-powered tool called Playground, that allows users to build mini apps with simple text prompts. It can then be deployed to the Essential Apps platform. Users need to describe the functionality they want using natural-language prompts, and the AI builds an app that meets their needs.
What’s New in the Playground?
The newly launched Playground is currently in beta and rolling out to Nothing Phone 3 users through the Essential Apps, which was previously limited to internal and alpha releases. The company plans to expand availability to other Nothing and CMF devices running Nothing OS 4.0 or later once the beta is stable.
In an example shared on X, Essential showed a user, asking Playground to “Create an app that suggests the best time to work out based on my calendar, the weather, and my training plan.” The tool then created an app within a few minutes, as requested.
One noteworthy benefit is that the platform allows users to update, modify, and even roll back to previous versions of their apps, ensuring reliability and flexibility.
Regarding Permissions and Future Enhancements
Currently, Essential Apps can request only three permissions, including location, contacts, and calendar (read-only), which allows users to create widgets such as location-based reminders, one-tap contact tools, and meeting countdowns.
However, Nothing has no plans to introduce additional capabilities through future updates, including activity recognition, weather API integration, Bluetooth connectivity, camera and microphone access, and more. Applications created using Playground can be deployed instantly to the Phone’s home screen and shared through the Playground platform.
Public release is expected later this year. The newly launched tool shows how generative AI is simplifying app development without any coding knowledge. Even though it may not replace full-scale development platforms, Playground clearly depicts a shift towards AI-generated mobile apps.
