OpenAI’s ChatGPT Chat and Work Tabs Now Merges In Desktop App

OpenAI is making the ChatGPT experience simpler and more unified, with easy navigation. The company is merging ChatGPT’s Chat and Work tabs in its desktop application.

The ChatGPT desktop app can be confusing to navigate, with sections like ChatGPT and Codex, plus Chat and Work tabs. These options make it tough for users to find specific projects they need and keep track of their work.

To address this concern, OpenAI merges ChatGPT Chat and Work tabs, letting users move from exploring ideas to completing tasks without switching between sections of the app. The change came to light in an email OpenAI sent to users. This new experience will be initially available to select users for feedback before rolling out widely.

Shared Usage Allowance Across ChatGPT and Codex

OpenAI also said that both ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same usage pool as the company brings Work’s agentic capabilities into the main ChatGPT experience. According to OpenAI’s statement, “Starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business plans usage allowance will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex as we bring the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience.”

While it may not impact most users, some users may need to wait for usage resets, depending on usage and model. Instant chat will not consume this usage allowance.

As stated in the company’s email, “This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place. You can bring in your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.”

A Strong Competition in the Industry

The update follows a similar move by competitor Anthropic in September this year, where the company merged Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into one interface. ChatGPT owner OpenAI aims to reduce interface complexity and make ChatGPT more convenient for users managing projects, files, and multi-step tasks.
