OpenAI introduces the Codex App to advance AI agent development, management, and collaboration between agents for macOS. The platform is set to support using agents for long-running tasks. OpenAI stated about the launch in a blog post, “Expanding what developers can do, with the new Codex app for macOS.”
OpenAI unveiled Codex as a research preview or cloud-based software to manage agents in 2025. The launch predominantly transformed the way developers operate with AI agents. While it allowed models to handle complex, long-running tasks, the challenge was how easily developers could direct, control, and collaborate with these models at scale.
To address this challenge, OpenAI brought the Codex desktop app. The App works as a command center for agents. OpenAI integrates the tool with ChatGPT Free and Go for a limited time. Alongside that, the rate limits for Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, and Edu plans are increased. Users will experience higher limits everywhere they use Codex, including the app, CLI, IDE, and the cloud.
The Codex app is about to change the way software is built, alongside who can build it. The app is capable of establishing collaboration with a single coding agent to managing teams of agents that handle the entire software lifecycle, from design to deployment and maintenance.
OpenAI has incorporated security by design in the entire Codex agent stack. Codex agents are restricted by default to editing files and running commands on the folders or branches they have permission to access. For further access, Codex needs extended permissions.
What Capabilities Does Codex App Offer?
- Work in parallel with multiple agents: Developers can now experience multitasking with agents with the Codex app. You can easily switch between tasks, eliminating the concern of losing context while multiple agents run in different threads.
- Do more alongside code generation: OpenAI integrates skills in Codex that enable the app to go beyond just code generation. It allows easy data collection and analysis, problem-solving, writing, and more.
- Automate delegate repetitive work: Developers can automate repetitive tasks, while Codex operates in the background following an automatic schedule. It can also automate important repetitive tasks, such as daily release brief generation, checking for bugs, and others.
- Choose a personality that fits your work: Codex allows developers to choose between two personalities, including pragmatic and empathetic. It is to enable developers to have different preferences when they work with AI agents.
Availability and Pricing of the Codex App:
OpenAI’s Codex app has been available for macOS users since its launch on February 2, 2026. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers can use the app on the web, CLI, and IDE extension with their ChatGPT credentials. However, Codex is available for ChatGPT Free and Go users for a limited time.
OpenAI has increased the rate limits for existing Codex users with paid plans. While Codex requires ChatGPT subscriptions, users can also buy additional credits if needed.
