OpenAI is reportedly aiming to accelerate its secret AI initiative by onboarding ex-Apple employees. As per the sources, the AI giant hired over 40 former employees last month, including hardware specialists, engineers, and designers. With this step, OpenAI has asserted its goal to transform AI-enabled services and devices in the upcoming years.
Notably, OpenAI recently acquired io, an AI founded by former Apple employee, Jony Ive. The recent hiring indicates an endeavor to achieve OpenAI’s long-awaited AI hardware project. Alongside these moves, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive hinted at a major advancement in AI hardware by 2026.
Why is OpenAI Targeting Onboard Ex-Apple Employees?
OpenAI’s recent recruits from Apple include senior executives, design specialists, and directors. These experts have played a significant role in Apple’s hardware advancements over the years. Reportedly, Apple’s former Industrial Design Head, Evans Hankey, and Product Engineering Executive, Tang Tan, are also among the employees hired by OpenAI.
This step will surely help Jony Ive build a robust team to take OpenAI’s hardware project to the next level. Additionally, the Ive is familiar with the new recruits’ skill set, which will surely assist OpenAI in deploying the appropriate skills effectively.
Apple’s Future AI Projects:
While OpenAI is poaching Apple’s top former engineers and designers, the latter also intends to boost its AI hardware initiatives. Smart home hardware, robot-driven initiatives, and smart glasses are among Apple’s future AI-enabled products, which will solidify the firm’s position in the AI race. Nevertheless, the talent overhaul is significantly slowing Apple’s progress.
The competitive industry has also been a key reason for Apple’s slow progress in the AI space. While firms like OpenAI and Google are excelling in the game with continuous progression in their AI models- ChatGPT and Gemini, Apple’s once popular AI assistant, Siri, is clearly losing its widespread popularity.
