OpenAI has launched GPT-5.5 Instant as the new default model for ChatGPT. The model is set to offer smarter answers with stronger accuracy and deeper personalization. It began rolling out on May 5, 2026, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant for ChatGPT users worldwide. OpenAI suggested that the update is introduced to enhance everyday interactions while keeping response speed fast and effective.
Notably, OpenAI has preserved its safety and security approaches in the new model, as in previous versions. The AI frontrunner is treating it as High capability in our Cybersecurity and Biological & Chemical Preparedness categories.
Key Features to Look After:
Clearer and Concise Responses:
GPT-5.5 Instant delivers clearer and more concise responses than previous Instant models. OpenAI noted that the model reduces unnecessary formatting, excessive emojis, and long explanations while keeping conversations natural.
Improved Personalization:
The new model is also one step ahead when it comes to personalization. GPT-5.5 Instant can now use context from past chats, uploaded files, and connected Gmail accounts to tailor responses more effectively. OpenAI added a new ‘memory sources’ that allow saved memories or conversations to influence a response. Users can also delete or edit those memory references directly from ChatGPT.
Enhanced Image Analysis, Reasoning, and Web Search:
The model further improves image analysis, STEM reasoning, and web search handling. OpenAI says GPT-5.5 Instant can better decide when to search the web for updated information, rather than relying solely on existing knowledge.
Benchmarks Achieved by GPT-5.5 Instant:
OpenAI highlighted major advancements in factual accuracy with the new model. According to the AI leader, GPT-5.5 Instant produced 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims than GPT-5.3 Instant on high-stakes prompts involving medicine, finance, and law. It also reduced inaccurate claims by 37.3% in difficult conversations previously flagged for factual errors.
The model also improved benchmark scores in reasoning and mathematics. It achieved 81.2 on the AIME 2025 math benchmark, compared with 65.4 for GPT-5.3 Instant. It also scored 76 on the MMMU-Pro multimodal reasoning benchmark, improving on the earlier model’s 69.2 score.
OpenAI’s system card added that GPT-5.5 Instant is now treated as a ‘High capability’ model in cybersecurity and biological preparedness categories, leading to stricter safeguards.
Availability and Pricing:
GPT-5.5 Instant is rolling out to all ChatGPT users and is also available in the API under the ‘chat-latest’ configuration. OpenAI said GPT-5.3 Instant will remain accessible for paid users for three months before retirement.
Enhanced personalization features are currently rolling out to Plus and Pro users on the web. OpenAI plans to expand those capabilities to Free, Business, and Enterprise users in the coming weeks.
